CONCEPT NOTE – GO GREEN OR PERISH

EVENT – 13TH July 2019, 6:30 PM Onwards at SELECT CITYWALK, SAKET

Environment has been the subject matter of concern for well over Five Decades now. Trees, the first victims of any development, be that for Agriculture, Housing, Industry, Power or even Sports from Tools to Books to Musical Instruments to Homes to Cooking to Play Equipment to Travel or even after Death, wood has been an intrinsic part of our lives from Ancient Times. Man has depended on wood for sustenance and every material comfort.

This Natures Bounty has been in abundance, and as with anything so readily available, the first 5000 years of civilization no one gave any thought towards its preservation.

And there lies the challenge of how to overcome the Dichotomy entrenched in our being, every Child or Adult over the past Three Decades fully understands the relationship of Trees and Environment. Indians worship Trees and no auspicious ceremony is performed without leaves as decorations. Other world cultures are replete with examples of their Reverence for Trees.

Recorded History’s first Petition was moved by a Renowned French Artist Theodore Rousseau when he saw the character of the forest changing radically with the advent of the railway in 1849, tourists and day-trippers used to flock to the forest situated 62 kms South East of Paris, at the same time, commercial interests led to cutting down of old growth trees.

In 1852, a few years after he had begun his painting ‘The Forest in Winter at Sunset’, Rousseau made the radical act of Petitioning Emperor Napoleon III. He said, 'I ask you for protection for these old trees, which for artists, are the source so much. They derive their inspiration, their joy and their future, which are for all visitors, venerable souvenirs of ages past.'....... It took time, but he was ultimately successful. Making the Forest of Fontainebleau the World's First Nature Preserve.

All across the world every new development is protested by Citizens, PleGovernments have their arguments and have developed counter narratives like Compensatory Plantation, Relocation etc. that the Courts are too keen to believe.

The Question is HOW DO WE CONVERT THE MASSIVE AWARENESS INTO TRANSFORMATION TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE LIVING ???

THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN TO ME or ek din toh sab ne marna hai……. Is the Placebo Effect, that despite awareness people are unable to see the Clear and Present Danger of the Catastrophe Looming…….. BE IT KNOWN IT MAY BE A PAINFUL DEATH…… and what shall we leave for future Generations.

No one can claim to be innocent or point fingers at others for being holier than thou, as the house we live in or the School, Mall, Hospital we went to, stands on the land where once trees lived. Let us put the past behind and pledge that though we made mistakes, we shall henceforth atone for the past and work towards a Greener Planet.

CHETNA (NGO) has been espousing the cause of Environment for the past Two Decades and have filed multiple PIL’s on various Environmental issues, be that fossil fuel emissions by Cars and Aircrafts, destruction of the Aravali Ridge, Noise Pollution etc and has been successful in forcing the Government to introduce mitigating measures or take corrective steps through Court Orders or Public Pressure through Awareness Campaigns.

Last year on 2nd July 2018 CHETNA got a Stay Order for further cutting of trees in the Prime Location in the Heart of Lutyens Delhi from the Hon’ble NGT. Since then there has been a concerted effort to create awareness and numerous set of TREE WARRIORS have pledged to ensure that City’s Lungs shall no longer be sacrificed for unsustainable Development.

On the occasion of the First Anniversary of the Stay Order and to spread Awareness, CHETNA along with Partner Organizations is unveiling the Installation ‘GO GREEN OR PERISH’ at a Gala Event hosted in Collaboration with Select CityWalk on Saturday, 13th July, 2019 at 7:00 pm.

The highlight of the event is a Dance Sequence on Tree Protection by Children of the Akshay Pratisthan  School, choreographed by Karma Tashi, which will culminate in a Crescendo and unveiling of the Installation ‘GO GREEN OR PERISH’ the Theme Conceived by Flavour Of Art Foundation’s Rajiv Kakaria and Executed by Eminent Artist Roop Chand along with a Team of Artists and Volunteers.

The Installation depicting Destruction and Death, in a Landscape of Chopped Tree Stumps and the Children & Adults who were dancing a while ago, dropping dead in their places and many Mannequins strewn in the Open Walkway of the Mall. In this Scenario of Despair and Gloom, standing tall is the ‘TREE OF HOPE – With the Message – EACH ONE PROTECT ONE.
